Guidelines for Accurate Pregnancy Scanning
Supplement Management: Cease supplements one or two days before scanning.
- Feed and Water: Remove feed and water from ewes the day before scanning.
- Assistance: Ensure adequate help is available on the day of scanning to keep the sheep moving efficiently.
- Joining Period: Ensure the length of joining does not exceed six weeks.
- Ram Management: Keep rams separate from the flock at other times.
- Booking: Schedule your scanning appointment through ‘scannersmate’ when you remove the rams from the ewes to determine the optimal scanning date.
Considerations for Joining
- Ewe Cycles: A ewe cycles approximately every 16 days for around 24 hours.
- Gestation: The average gestation period is 147 days.
- Stress Factors: Shearing or high stress within a month of mating can disrupt cycling, leading to late lambs. Stressful conditions can also affect ram fertility, impacting mating results.
- Ram Ratios: The recommended ratio is 1-2 rams per 100 ewes, or 1 ram per 50 ewes for hoggets.
- Nutrition: Aim to have ewes on a rising plane of nutrition for 3-4 weeks before and during mating.
